Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was crowned Miss America on September 15. The first Indian-American to be crowned Miss America, Davuluri has sparked racial controversy all over social media.
Buzzfeed recently posted an article screencapping racist tweets after the Miss America decision. One tweet reads, ” And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic.” Out of all of the them, my personal favorite was from @JAyres15 (wonderful selfie twitter icon by the way Jessica), ” I swear I’m not racist but this is America.”
The crowning of Nina Davuluri is a wonderful symbol for change, and the negative response only solidifies the reality that racism is still prevalent in American society. Too often we criticize other countries such as those in the Middle East for being terrible to women, when we are blinded by our own problems in our home country.
The ignorance of many Americans is honestly horrifying. The influx of Arab tweets, especially some linked to 9/11 (@LukeBrasili, “9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?) are so terrible that it is almost funny how warped some people in this country have become. Nina Davuluri is Indian-American. India is NOT an Arab country. It is predominantly Hindu, which I’m not sure if people realize is different from Muslim. But they are right next to each other geographically though??? So they are pretty much the same thing, right? Any skin tone remotely darker than those descended by Anglo-Saxon people is automatically assumed as that mass of Middle Eastern countries that “are the enemy”. The United States has no issues with India whatsoever, unlike the growing conflict in Syria, which IS a Middle Eastern country.
If you happen to fall under the pathetic category that believes Nina Davuluri shouldn’t be Miss America based off of race, you might want to brush up on your history. America is not a single racial country. We pride ourselves off of the melting pot our country is.
Caucasians are NOT the original settlers of America either. It doesn’t matter what history you take, but a recurring theme of early American history is our unwarranted mistreatment of Native Americans, who mostly welcomed us with open arms. How did British colonists respond? Just by forcefully taking their land and destroying their settlements. Nice.
Nina Davuluri winning Miss America is a step in the right direction. Showing the world that America is a country where all races can coexist is how we can set an example for racial equality for the rest of the world. Nina won not due to her diversity, but due to her talent, her beauty, and charisma.
Congratulations Nina, and represent America as a nation built on racial integration, rather than a nation of white supremacy.
